Friday Thoughts 1 - First Attempt In Learning’

It’s the last Friday in March and we are still going. It was a lovely start to the week to read the staff appreciation email from Neil early in the day and really gave me a positive spin to start the week. I don’t think any of us could be accused of taking one another for granted, however this really served to highlight that this really is only the tip of the iceberg of what people are doing for others. The pride with which I read it is indescribable and those early days in August when so many of us were meeting for the first time seems such a long time ago, yet really not so long ago at all. Just as the pride we take when our newest students are flourishing under our care, it is important to remember that many of our team have only been in post since August, with others even more recent appointments. There isn’t a ‘rule book’ and there isn’t a precedent to follow, we just do what we can when we can. It is wonderful that we are now able to support colleagues across the world who find themselves in similar positions and that we are able to show them that it is possible.

It has been another rollercoaster of a week for all of us, although some more than others, and again it is a testament to the resilience and teamwork across the school and community which has kept all of us going. Each and every one of us will have been experiencing a whole range of emotions, some identifiable and others less so. This is completely normal and the only thing I can say is that it is so crucial that we use the support networks available to us. As we see the impact of the pandemic across the world, and how different people are responding to it, it is even clearer that we are all in this together. The recent announcement regarding restrictions will not have helped a number of our colleagues and, again, we will do whatever we can to support one another.

One of the best parts of my day is when I go on to seesaw and browse through all of the posts. Officially I am ‘quality assuring’, but it is such a pleasure it feels like a treat! It is such a powerful example of just what we have achieved and will continue to achieve. I set out to write an article for the school newsletter about the Head Teacher’s commendations I was looking forward to giving out, albeit virtually. The sheer number and variety have meant that I will be splitting it into three and they won’t be sent out until next week. The feeling of heartfelt joy and the difficulty of who to choose was palpable and I just wanted to say once more thank you for taking the time to send them through.

Looking forward to next week and the move toward MS TEAMS is the next step in the journey.

There are a lot of people working incredibly hard to make sure that we have done everything we can in order to make this work and I know that, whatever the difficulties we face, we will have done our best; I do not want anyone to be facing unnecessary anxieties. This is something we need to do and we are giving it a go. It is also imperative that we evaluate as we go along to make sure that we are meeting the needs of the majority. We have to approach this next step in the same vein as we have approached every other. Whatever happens, we are learning and we are progressing. We will also make changes as necessary and appropriate after those first two weeks. I am, what I once heard someone describe as, a ‘recovering perfectionist’. Teaching is the best job to show you that nothing will ever be perfect and that is ok. What we have to remember is that ‘FAIL’ is actually our ‘First Attempt In Learning’.

To finish on a lighter note (thank you to Mr Jolly for his ‘important dates’), Wednesday this week was ‘waffle day’. For all those of us who were unable to participate in any waffle festivities, there is a second ‘waffle day’ on the 24th August. I shall not ‘waffle’ on any longer (this was much longer than I had set out for it to be) and just want to finish with another huge thank you and to let you all know that, wherever you are, I am thinking of you and wish you a very Happy Friday.
