Friday Thoughts 12 - Just a little extra one

Congratulations and well done everybody; we have completed the academic year 2019-2020! (Well, those of us who don’t teach in secondary have… it’s still congratulations to them, just a little early.)

I did think about sending this tomorrow (as it’s Friday) and it’s been a busy day despite not having children or many staff around, however my OCD wouldn’t allow as I had already sent my ‘Final Friday Thoughts’).

Some of this I said yesterday during my final briefing, but some were not able to join and I was admittedly a little emotional, so here it is again with a few additions.

I honestly can’t believe that we are now at the end of the year and what a year it has been. I remember standing here before you for the very first time in August and all I felt was pride. Now, battered, bruised and drained, I am full of so much more, more than I could ever have dreamed of. I am so lucky to have such an incredible team around me and couldn’t wish for anything more. We have all been pushed to our limits and then some and every one of us has come out stronger. I cannot quantify how different the ‘school’ is now. There is so much love both here in the building and across the miles. I remember writing about whether the school was the building or the people and saying it’s definitely the people. It still is and it always will be.

In many ways, these ‘unusual circumstances’ have shown peoples’ true selves and just what they are capable of. You have all stepped up and done what was needed, whether it is getting up in the middle of the night, staying up until all hours, comforting distraught children/parents/colleagues or actually spending time teaching which, after all, is the job we all signed up for!

It’s not the end of the year we all expected, but it is where we are. It’s time to say goodbye to colleagues remotely for the first time and I don’t think any of us expected that they would be going for anything longer than a holiday when they got on those planes in January. Final year group placements are made, for a plan A at least! Thank you for your patience, I know many of you are pleased with the outcome and I am confident that it is what is best for the children. Again, the best we can offer right now.

‘Thank you’ doesn’t seem a big enough word (two words?), but I really do mean it. September will bring its own challenges and we will be ready for them as a team, just as we have this year, whether everyone is back as expected or not.

I wish you all a good rest and all the best to those off to pastures new. You’re all amazing and don’t you ever forget it!
