Friday Thoughts 17 - Bostin'!

Happy Mid-Autumn festival everyone!

Some weeks I know exactly what to share with you and others I wait for a spark of inspiration. This week has been an unusual one and possibly made more so by the fact that we are now finished for a holiday after just 4 weeks, yet it feels like months. I honestly cannot thank everyone enough for all of their hard work and determination. I was able to speak to all of the LAs during their celebration earlier to thank them for all of their support because, as always, we couldn’t do it without them. The best thing about today is that we genuinely feel like a community again and it is going to be really great when every one of us is back together. I am just so proud of all of our children and so proud to be here. Yet again, I find myself shaking my head in awe that we have done this. We got this far and we did it together. I have come back from the staff celebration where I was able to just chat to people without the feeling of needing to be somewhere else or for more than a fleeting ‘hello’.

Earlier in the week I had a message from one of my best friends whose little boy is in Y3. His homework this week was in preparation for European Day of Languages. They aren’t allowed parents in school either, so would I be able to help at all? So my mission today was to find some willing participants and I was not disappointed! I have to admit that possibly my favourite moment was a girl in Y3 who said ‘My name is… and I am from…’. When I asked her if she would mind saying it in her home language rather than English she wasn’t quite so keen! And to a certain someone, no, saying ‘hello’ in a Welsh accent is not the same as saying it in Welsh… :)

My contribution is to tell you that you are all bostin’. For those of you who aren’t fluent in Black Country, that’s a compliment.

If you would like more of an education, feel free to peruse this site: https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/birmingham-black-country-accent-phrases-6477059. I have to admit to suddenly understanding the vacant looks when using some apparently colloquial terminology and there have been many a discussion over what bread rolls are called across the country. And no, I was not being rude!

I can’t finish without sharing my music for the week. I’ve not been able to settle to anything I’m afraid. I’ve gone from Moby to REM to Bryan Adams and now to the 90s All Lined Up. I think it’s been reflective of the craziness of this week. Metallica is now playing and it’s made me smile as I remember some very dear friends with whom I shared so many experiences before we simply lost touch. We were even friends despite them not being able to ‘spayke propah’ (they were from Birmingham).

Anyway, ta-ra a bit and see you in October!
